The revolution started in Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg), then the capital of Russia, and the main motivator was discontent because of food rationing implemented by the monarchy. The Army eventually joined the revolutionaries, and three days later the Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate, putting an end to the Russian empire.
