The Ancient Egyptians believed a person was made up of a physical body, a personality (<em>ba</em>), a name, a shadow, and a life-force or spirit (<em>ka</em>). A ka statue was intended to give the spirit a place to rest after the death of a person.

They were usually made of wood or stone and painted to resemble the owner.
