In "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee Jem and Scout first find a ball of grey twine in the knot of the tree.  Later in the fall the children find figurines made of soap carved to resemble themselves. The next day after finding the figurines they find the knothole has ben filled with cement.
