Before the establishment of a republic, Rome was a monarchy which was ruled by the Etruscan dynasty for more than hundreds of years. The Roman Republic resulted in overthrowing of the monarchy (the Roman Empire) and establishment of a democracy.

After establishment of a republic, the newly formed government functioned such that citizens elected representatives who would govern the country on their behalf. In that government, every eligible citizen is known to play a role in governing the country.
