Chapter 20 Question: a) What distinction does Atticus make in his speech about the written and unwritten laws of Maycomb?

English

Mashutka [201]4 years ago

He discussed to the Court about how there are written laws in Maycomb that the Ewells break regularly, but there are also unwritten laws that exist in their community. Maycomb has a certain social code that its citizens are expected to live by. One of these is that there should not be any affection between a white woman and a black man. He makes this distinction, because although there may not have been a written rule against it, this was the broken "law" that mattered more than any other social code broken by the Ewells previously.

Both Connie and Arnold have “two sides” to them. Explain what that means
lord [1]

Answer:

A friend kidnaps and coerces Connie, a self-centered teen girl, and takes her to his home. Arnold Friend is a middle-aged man who wears a wig and tight jeans to look the part. On his way to the drive-in with Connie, he threatens her.

We learn early on in the narrative that Connie has "two sides"-one that governs her private life and the other that governs her social outings with friends. Because of this, Connie manipulates her environment by lying to people. Connie is fooled into believing that Arnold Friend is just another admirer, unaware of his nefarious intentions. No one will ever know that they are only safe because she accepted her captivity.
