I think the theme of the novel A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is Class and poverty.
Almost every characters in the novel had to deal with the problems that exist within their social classes

Many different themes appeared in the novel. Among them class struggle, education and gender issues are the leading themes. İn the light of these themes, universal theme reveals the central message of the story. We can generalize all the universal themes discussed in the novel in a following manner: Life is not always in a way we want it to be; Childhood is a perfect timing for life lessons and It is not always easy to tell the truth.
