The man in "The Nose" is very concerned that his lack of nose will prevent him from getting a good job. The story does not explain why the man loses the nose, nor does it ever question the possibility of this happening. The fact that the man is so concerned about his job, and not about his lack of nose is a way of criticizing the Russian society, which placed so much importance in status and wealth.
