Austen uses Mrs. Palmer as a social commentary on people who spend too much time in other people's business. Mrs. Palmer knows little of people's personal lives yet assumes and gossips about much of them. Her purpose is to be a comedic relief and a satire on people like this. This example is timeless and still applies today. Austen also cleverly uses Mrs. Palmer as a way to plant ideas in the reader's head, and get the reader and the characters thinking about the credibility of the statements that Mrs. Palmer assumes are true.

5. Which sentence uses an informal tone to appeal to an audience of high school students?
Anna [14]

Answer:

4. Being a friend means being respectful, fair, interested, trustworthy, honest, caring, and kind.

Explanation:

When someone is holding a speech, they need to pay attention to what their audience is like. The tone a speaker will use will not be the same when they're speaking to an audience that consists of scientists and one that consists of high school students.

Students mostly use informal language. Informal language is more casual, spontaneous, and personal than formal language, which is always carefully thought out and mostly used in a professional or academic setting.

The sentence that uses informal language is the fourth one. The vocabulary and sentence structure are simple and similar to what we would hear in everyday situations, which is typical for informal language.
