This is based on the journey American pioneers to the West had to take.

Food was a very important consideration for the journey and planning for it was difficult because taking it lightly could mean the difference between life and death.

If insufficient food was packed, it could run out before the migrants reached their destination which would lead to starvation.

If food was too much, the animals would be overburdened. On top of that one could not rely on substituting packed food with foraging because that was unreliable.

This all goes to painting a picture of a very difficult decision to make when packing food because it has to be just the right amount.
