In 2006, World Trade Organization stated that Europe had illegally restricted the import of genetically modified crops. But Europe argued that the crops posed legitimate risks on people’s health and environment. So, it took time for them to take decisions and make regulations.

Many European countries wanted to be free from genetically modified crops. WTO found that Europe had posed de facto ban on GM food since 1998 which meant that they violated the trade agreement rules.
