You said that                                 n/3           =  n/2 + 12 .

There's only one number that 'n' can be.
It may or may not be an integer.  We'll have to see.

Subtract  n/2  from each side:      n/3 - n/2  =            12

Multiply each side by  12 :            4n  -  6n  =           144

Do the subtraction on the left:            -  2n  =           144

Divide each side by  -2 :                          n    =         - 72

Yep.  It turns out that 'n' is an integer.
It didn't have to be, just because you said so.
For example, if you said that  n/3  is only
11 greater than  n/2 , we could figure out
what number 'n' must be, and it wouldn't
be an integer.

What is the first of four consecutive numbers if their sum is 810?
Pachacha [2.7K]

Let x be the first of the four consecutive numbers.

Then x+1 is the second,

and x+2 is the third,

and x+3 is the fourth.

If their sum is 810, then

   x + x+1 + x+2 + x+3 = 810

If you solve that equation for x, you'll have the answer to your question.

Catie is trying to determine the height that a ladder reaches as it leans against a wall. She walks under the ladder and touches
brilliants [131]
18.56 feet
Catie creates a similar triangle with the ladder so we can create a proportion to solve for the height.
\frac{baseto feet}{base to wall} = \frac{catie height}{wall height}
Convert all values to feet . 16in = 1.33 ft . 5ft 6 in = 5.5 ft
Insert values into proportions
\frac{1.33}{4.5} = \frac{5.5}{x}
Cross multiply to get
24.75=1.33x
divide both sides by 1.33
x=18.56ft

A man wants to make up 100 one-pound jars of nuts to sell for 66 cents a jar. He plans to use 40 pounds of nuts worth 75 cents a
zheka24 [161]

Answer:

x = 60 cents.

Step-by-step explanation:

The man wants to make up 100 one-pound jars of nuts, it means he will need 100 pounds of nuts. He plans to use 40 pounds of one type of nuts, so he needs 60 pounds of the other type of nuts to get 100 pounds.

Now, with this we can write a linear equation:

(40*0.75)+(60*x) = 100*0.66 (1)

Where:

  • 0.75 is the unit price of the 40 pounds of one type of nuts.
  • x is the unit price of the 60 pounds of the other type of nuts.
  • 0.66 is the unit price of 100 one-pound jars.

Let's solve the equation (1) for x:

x=\frac{100*0.66-40*0.75}{60}

Therefore, x = 60 cents.

I hope it helps you!
