Alexandria is a city, port, in the Mediterranean part of Egypt. Founded by Alexander the Great, 332 BC. was an important center of Helenistic civilization, and was the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt, then the Roman and Byzantine Egypt, until the arrival of the Muslims, when the capital moved to Cairo.
