Despite coming from nomadic tribes, the Mongols rose to become a powerful force in world.  They conquered and established empires both in the East and the West.  Despite their barbaric nature, Mongol rulers like Kublai Khan promoted astronomy and medicine as well employed Confucian scholars in his court.  He also encouraged more contact between the East and the West.  This helped usher in the Age of Exploration.
