He listened quietly, staring off into space, and I assumed he was collecting his thoughts for an answer, but a few minutes later

he cleared his throat and shook his head. That, he explained apologetically, was outside his area of specialization. His interest was in interest rates, and he hadn't given military economics much thought. He suggested I see Dr Wessey, who once did a paper on War Trade Agreements during World War II. He might be able to help me. Before I could say anything else, he grabbed my hand and shook it. He had been glad to meet me, but there were some notes he had to assemble for a lecture. And then he was gone.

Read the excerpt below and answer the question. She was a small woman, short and straight-waisted like a child in her brown cott
lisabon 2012 [21]

The excerpt uses explicit details in the following way: it provides a physical description of Sarah Penn (small woman, short waist, gray hair, mild forehead, downward lines about her nose and mouth). All of it is explicit, since there is no room for interpretation, it is what it is. In other words, such details are concrete ones, since they are physical and nothing else.

As for implicit details, we can find them in a figure of speech (a hypallage, which uses an adjective or participle to describe a noun other than the person or thing it is in fact describing): we learn Sarah Penn's forehead was benevolent, that is, it showed her benevolence (an implicit detail, since it was Sarah, and not her forehead, that was benevolent). It is a trait which implicitly tells something about the character's personality. There is also the description of meek downward lines about her nose and mouth. Again, a hypallage which implicitly tells us something about the character: it is Sarah who is gentle and humble, and not the lines about her nose and mouth.

gogolik [260]

Answer:

  • The theme of alienation
  • Influence of African American customs
  • Incorporation of musical folk traditions.

Explanation:

Harlem Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement, started in the 1920s, establishing itself as the flowering of African American culture. The Harlem Renaissance was composed of a series of artistic works, among which, literature was one of the most prominent. The literary works had a strong racial pride, extolling African American customs and characteristics and criticizing the racism present in the country. Nevertheless, the works often addressed alienation as a theme, moreover, as much music as literature presented the incorporation of musical folk traditions.

Identify the primary rhetorical device:
emmainna [20.7K]

The primary rhetorical device in the sentence is parallelism, since a grammatical structure is repeated for emphasis and persuasion, as explained below.

What is a rhetorical device?

A rhetorical device is any technique used with persuasion and emphasis as its purpose. That is, anything a writer or a speaker does or says in order to persuade their audience of something is a rhetorical device.

In the excerpt "I’ve seen things on the range. I’ve battled my share of snakes. I’ve dealt with snakes that were animals and snakes that were people," the primary rhetorical device is parallelism. Parallelism is the repetition of a grammatical structure inside a sentence. The structure being repeated here is:

  • noun + that + were + noun
  • snakes that were animals
  • snakes that were people

With the information above in mind, we can select option D as the correct answer for this question.
