The Battle of Normandy lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, and it resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control. The battle began on June 6, 1944, and this day came to be known as D-Day. 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed in the coast of France, and initiated one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. This is considered the beginning of the end of the war in Europe.
