He was a radical republican. He strongly opposed Johnson who had broken from the Radicals and his lenient policies to readmitted Southerners. Stevens was one of the men who adamantly voted for Johnson's impeachment. Though Johnson was not impeached, they were successful in taking Reconstruction overview from Johnson. when Johnson's cronies lost in the 1866 election, the Radicals took over and overruled Johnson's numerous vetoes. He supported Grant who often went along with the Senate's ideas before dying in 1868.
