"One day, when we had a smooth sea and moderate wind, two of my wearied countrymen who were  chained together (I was near them at the time), preferring death to such a life of misery, somehow made  through the nettings and jumped into the sea"

Explanation:

"Aboard a Slave Ship" explains the real life situation of how over 12 Million Africans were forced to travel to the New World to become enslaved. They were chained to the boat and treated very poorly. It was a dangerous journey. Just like this quote says, many of the Africans would prefer death. Out of the 12 Million+ Africans on the boats, 2 million died on their way.

This took place from 1525 to 1866.
