The Odyssey shows that the Greek gods helped the humans when they were in need and they wanted the humans to need them. For example, when Odysseus was captured by Calypso, Athena was there to help. When Odysseus returned to Ithica, Athena helped Odysseus by making him look like a beggar so that he could return to his wife Penelope and get rid of the suitors. I'm reading the book right now in class and this is what I have taken in so far. Hope it helps!
