Herbert Lawrence Block (1909-2001) also known as Herblock was an American cartoonist recognized for his criticism of U.S. domestic and international policies.

During the early 1950s, Herblock portrayed usually the image of Senator Joseph McCarthy who conducted several inquiries and hearings in order to expose suspected communist penetration of various U.S. government regions. In the cartoons, McCarthy was always obsessive, even inaccurate about the investigations he was carrying out. Possibly Herblock chose to portray the senator that way because he guessed was eventually was confirmed: McCarthy's beliefs had no base and never found a real proof. The term McCarthyism was coined even to give meaning to all that allegation that was unsubstantiated charged.
