In 2005 there was an earthquake that caused a lot of damage and killed a lot of people.

Malala's family raised money in order to help the people and families affected by the tragedy. As a result of this earthquake, many children were left without a family, so they were taken under the wing of a fundamentalist group (JuD) that, among many other things, did not believe in women's rights.

Because of what the earthquake caused, Malala saw the importance of education, generosity and women's rights.

Malala witnessed her family helping those who had been affected by the disaster, and how empathic they were.

Finally, Malala saw how prejudicial fundamentalist groups were, and the amount of damage they could do by imparting their extreme beliefs.
