The Monroe Doctrine was the policy that the United States held in favor of the Americas from 1823 in opposing European colonialism and recognizing the independence of the territories of Mexico and the nations of Central and South America as independent nations of European power. The doctrine emphatically stated that, if European nations sought to take control of any independent state in North or South America, such acts would be taken as a hostile manifestation towards the United States; but also, the Monroe Doctrine said that they would recognize, and never interfere, with the European colonies still existing, and that the USA would not take action in the internal affairs of the countries of Europe.
