A million men and boys break for the train. Bud gets pushed to the side and is nearly trampled until someone reaches down and pulls him up and helps him keep running. Bugs gets on first and yells to Bud to throw him his case.
Mr. Zanetti had tough hands that were tougher than any hands Alfred had ever seen. This is an indication that Mr. Zanetti has done a lot of physical labor and has calloused hands from all the work he has done, likely with heavy things or out in the elements. The suspicious tone that Mr. Zanetti uses when asking if Alfred is really looking for work shows that Mr. Zanetti is most likely a strict boss who demands great effort and results from his employees.
Maggie would be a static character here since static characters are defined as being characters who do not undergo changes in a story. Static characters are considered as such because their personality and actions tend to stay the same as the plot of the story progress. This feature does not prevent them from influencing or changing other characters, but it does mean that they end the story without having suffered any real transformation or transition.
The bird is extremely frustrated because he is trapped in a crate. While Maggie is trying to comfort him, it is not much use because of the incredible shame he feels due to being stuck in a cage. The inability to soar high in the sky produces an almost overwhelming sadness. This is is accentuated by the fact that he can feel his wings close to him but cannot use them to make himself feel better.
