The big stick diplomacy refers to the quote <span>"Speak softly, and carry a </span>big stick." as President Theodore Roosevelt had said. Roosevelt essentially meant that leaders should endeavor to keep peace inwardly while never letting other nations ambiguity the military power of the United States of America. President Roosevelt put this guideline to use several times during his presidency, among other things when he amended the Monroe Doctrine during the Venezuela crisis. Therefore the quote <span>"Speak softly, and carry a </span>big stick<span>." means a whole different thing. Hope this helped!

Big stick diplomacy is a term that is used to describe the foreign policy of President Theodore Roosevelt. There are five elements that were basic to this. First, Roosevelt believed it was important to possess serious military capability. Second, he believed that it was important to act according to justice. Third, Roosevelt believed he should never bluff. Fourth, the country should only strike if it was prepared to strike hard. Finally, the country should be ready to allow the adversary to save face in defeat.
