Ethos is the name given to a rhetorical device that makes an appeal to credibility. When an author employs ethos in a text, he usually makes a moral argument that appeals to his credibility on the subject. This is a strategy that Henry David Thoreau uses in "Resistance to Civil Government." In this text, Thoreau defends the need for people to act in accordance to their moral compass, whether this is against the law or not. He supports this claim by talking about his own experiences. Thoreau decided to commit a crime and go to jail in order to act according to his moral values. This act makes his appeal to credibility effective.

Do you think Anne Frank's age helped her stay more
Maslowich

Answer:

1. Yes, Anne's age helped her stay more optimistic.

2. No. Her words and spirit would have been different, if she was older.

Explanation:

1. The 'Diary of Anne Frank', portrays Anne to be a young energetic and high-spirited girl. As a young person Anne showed optimism during her stay in the annex, as she looked forward to exploring life after the war.

 • A major way she was able to remain optimistic, was by channeling her thoughts into writing. All negative feelings she had were put into writing and this was a good coping mechanism.
 • As a young girl, she never lost hope on going back to school after the war.
 • She made a joke of things so as to lighten the mood of people in the house and she also appreciated presents like her Christmas gifts.
 • She also became friends with Peter and this cheered her up the more.

2. If Anne were older her words and spirit might not have been the same.

 • Older people are known to censor their feelings more. This was not the case with Anne who protested her mothers attitude towards her frequently.
 • She had an interest in sexuality and did not shy away from writing about her relationship with her boyfriends.
 • She had an interest in exploring life and going back to school. An older person may not have these same expectations.

What is topic of a passage?

The topic of a passage is actually known to be the title given to that passage. When passages or texts are named, the writer does so with the aim of reflecting what the passage is all about.

We can see that the passage here talks about the people of Lakewood and how they move from place to place of in search of lumber. This description of the people of Lakewood actually depicts a nomadic lifestyle.

People who move from place to place in search of job and they don't have a fixed address are said to be nomadic. Thus, that is the reason behind the topic of the passage.
