In fact, Janissaries were infantry troops. <span>The janissaries were Turkish soldiers recruited from the young and healthy local Christian population in the Balkans, which were converted to Islam by force. They were than trained to serve the sultan, and were very well equipped. It is said that janissaries were very brutal and dangerous. The standing army composed of janissaries was formed in 1369. and existed until 1826.</span>
