Answer:

The correct order of events is:

1. An artist draws a picture of an obese man standing before a judge after committing a crime, it is a detailed illustration, and the artist feels it is by far his best work.

2. The artist goes on a walk. Without realizing it, he walks five or six miles and ends up at a stone mason's house. The stonemason is an obese man and identical to the man the artist drew.

3. The stonemason, named Atkinson, has just finished carving a beautiful tombstone. The name and date of birth on the tombstone are the artist's full name and date of birth. The date of death is today's date.

4. The stonemason and the artist determine they've never met before. The stonemason invites the artist to stay for dinner and spend the rest of the day with him and his wife, to insure the artist is not in an accident on the way home.

5. The artist and the stonemason go upstairs to get out of the heat. The artist continues to write in his journal and the stonemason sharpens his tools as they wait for the heat to break and the clock to strike midnight.

Explanation:

August Heat is a short ghost story written by William Fryer Harvey (1885 – 1937), published in 1910.

The story is about two men, an artist (James Clarence Withencoft) and a stonemason (Charles Atkinson) who have never met, but they share a common view that one of them will be murdered and the other will be the murder.
