"I didn't think there was any chance that these important judges--adults--would think that kids have rights." The Court's ruling gives students free-speech rights at school--but only up to a point. The justices said that school officials must balance kids' First Amendment rights with the need to maintain order. As long as an act of expression doesn't cause a "substantial disruption" or invade the rights of others, it's allowed. For example, the courts have since relied on the Tinker ruling to allow students to have nose rings and dyed hair but not to wear Confederate flag T-shirts in the classroom, because doing so might be disruptive.
