It was trying to keep holding power and spread their religion. They wanted everyone to believe what they believed in. They condemned those who didn't believe in their religion. They shaped society - the morals and the facts. They tried to give people an explanation for why things happened, both good and bad. They preached about how there was one god and his son was Jesus.

It had more territories in the past, then lost some, then was separated into two regions, then united again, so I'd say Germany is the correct answer. The other countries stayed the same, more or less.</span>
