Dalit means "oppressed" (option b). the origin of the word is in Marathi, and it's what they call themselves. By others they are called "untouchables"/
The word ''dalit'' roughly translates to ''oppressed'', and this is the term that is widely used by the people of the lower castes in India when they are describing themselves and the others of the same caste. The people from the other, higher castes, refer to them as ''untouchables'' which is a pretty offensive word objectively because it is referring to the people of the lower castes as unhealthy, unhygienic, diseased, and thus they should not be touched.
