Irony is Saying the opposite of what you mean and sometimes is funny.
For example- say there is a sign on a window that says no putting signs or pictures on windows.
Its ironic because there is a sign on the window telling you not to put them there.
In The Runaway Quilt, the slave catchers are described as aggressive men. Journal of Hannah Smalls, "the conflicts in In" the passage involve the narrator and her family escaping slavery. If the narrator and her family are caught, they would be punished with torture and death, so she is nervous about the plan.
