They are assigned an attorney by the court.
Clarence Gideon had been charged with a burglary in Florida, and the judge said he could not appoint an attorney for Mr. Gideon because the crime of which he was accused was not a capital offense. Gideon claimed he was entitled to be represented by counsel, but the judge did not agree. Gideon was convicted and went to state prison. From there, he appealed to the US Supreme Court in a suit against the Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections. (By the time the case came before the Supreme Court, that was Louie L. Wainwright, thus "Gideon v. Wainwright.")
The Supreme Court agreed with Mr. Gideon's claim, and since then, all persons, whether in state or federal court, are entitled to the right to counsel and an attorney is appointed if they cannot afford to hire their own.

Was the Enforcement Act of 1870 a valid exercise of Congress's power to enforce the Fifteenth
love history [14]

Answer:

No. In an 8-1 decision authored by Chief Justice Morrison Waite, the Court concluded that the relevant sections of the Enforcement Act lacked the necessary, limiting language to qualify as enforcement of the Fifteenth Amendment. The Chief Justice first stated that the Fifteenth Amendment "does not confer the right of suffrage upon any one," but "prevents the States, or the United States, however, from giving preference…to one citizen of the United States over another on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." In examining the language of the Enforcement Act, the Court noted that, while the first two sections of the act explicitly referred to race in criminalizing interference with the right to vote, the relevant third and fourth sections refer only to the "aforesaid" offense. According to the Court, this language does not sufficiently tailor the law to qualify as "appropriate legislation" under the Enforcement Clause of the Fifteenth Amendment.

Soon after the Bradford exploratory party went ashore, what did they dig up at an Indian village, something which they
Rasek [7]

Answer:

d. A dead Indian.

Explanation:

When the Plymouth colony ship crew and passengers docked at the shore, a small party was sent to explore the area inland. When the exploratory party went inland, they first encountered an old European-built house with an iron kettle, which was probably left behind by some ship's crew. They also came across recently cultivated fields, some of these fields still had corn stubble. Next, the team came across an artificial mound near the dunes. When they partially uncovered the mound, they found it to be an Indian grave, with a dead Indian. As they traveled further inland, other similar mounds were found, which were more recently, and these ones were graves with corns in them. The team then took some of the corn, which they later used as seed for planting, and covered the mound back with its remaining content.
