Exhalation is a science fiction novel written by Ted Chiang. The novel is written as a series of documents, and it depicts the law of Thermodynamics.

The novel conveys two themes, they are Life and Death. Throughout the story, these themes are interconnected. From the excerpt, we can figure out that how the narrator, who is the scientist, is taking his life for granted. He’s conducting experiment on himself, on his own brain. The line ‘I would then be able to dissect my own brain’ states how the scientist in going to cut up his own brain which can even lead to death.

The other theme Death depicts how death is inevitable and how each one of us should accept it and always be grateful for whatever we have. But it turns out that we don’t really appreciate the life we have been given.
