During his rule, president Jefferson called for a "crusade" against ignorance, because the republican vision of America included virtuous citizens. Republicans believed in the establishment of a nationwide system of public schools.

In addition, female academies were open, fomenting the "republican mother value": Women need education in order to teach their kids.
