Vocabulary Excercise
Trava [24]

Answer:

penury (Chapter 1)

emaciated (Chapter 4)

adduced (Chapter 8)

Explanation:

I've chosen the three words above from the novel "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. After looking them up in a dictionary, I was able to define them as the following:

penury - oppressive lack of resources; extreme poverty.

emaciated - thin and weak due to lack of food or due to illness.

adduced - past form of adduce - to give reasons as to why you believe something to be true.

Now, let's write sentences with the same context as given in the text of the novel:

Original: [...] while the number of half-clothed children gathered about it spoke of penury in its worst shape.

New sentence: The penury that desolates the country is clearly noted in children's bare feet and bloated stomachs.

Original: My cheek had grown pale with study, and my person had become emaciated with confinement.

New sentence: Her once glowing skin was now emaciated after a whole month in the hospital.

Original: [...] and as her confusion had before been adduced as a proof of her guilt, she worked up her mind to an appearance of courage.

New sentence: My tears were adduced as proof of my feelings for the deceased young man, even though I denied knowing him at all.

alexdok [17]

Answer:

Sports play an important part in a student's life due to numerous reasons.

There are many sports and games that take place in our school. The most popular sport at our school is Basketball. Apart from Basketball, students here play football, tennis, badminton, hockey, cricket and swimming.

Sports are important for students as they keep them physically fit. Health is wealth, and they cannot succeed without being in a good physical condition. Sports also allow students to relax their mind, away from the normal school subjects. Sports are a way of recreation. Sports also help build a better character in a student as they learn important skills such as team work and leadership.

Personally I believe swimming would benefit me the most as it uses all parts of the body. I find swimming very relaxing and fun. It is a good way to maintain my fitness, while relaxing at the same time. Basketball would also be a benefit to me, as it would help me develop team work skills.

It can be concluded that sports are very important for students.

What role did natural causes play in the Spaniards' ability to defeat and rule over Native American peoples who outnumbered them
Akimi4 [234]

Answer:

The outbreak of the smallpox epidemic helped the Spanish conquistadors defeat and rule over the Native Americans.

Explanation:

The Spaniards under conquistador Hernán Cortés were on an expedition to Mexico when they encountered the Aztecs. But despite their lesser number of supporters, he was able to defeat the whole city without much help needed.

The help came in the form of an epidemic, the spread of small-pox that killed almost half of the whole population. It spread from within the territory, fatally decreasing the whole population, reducing the people to a much lesser number which became an advantage for the conquistadors. This ironically helped in favoring the stance of Cortés and his men, helping in the defeat of the city.

Thus, the natural cause that played an important role in the defeat of the Native American people was the outbreak of small-pox and the deaths that resulted.
