The major, who had been a great fencer, did not believe in bravery, and spent much time while we sat in the machines correcting my grammar.

"I am sorry," he said, and patted me on the shoulder with his good hand. "I would not be rude. My wife has just died. You must forgive me."
"Oh—" I said, feeling sick for him. "I am so sorry."
He stood there biting his lower lip. "It is very difficult," he said. "I cannot resign myself."

The doctor went to his office in a back room and brought a photograph which showed a hand that had been withered almost as small as the major's, before it had taken a machine course, and after was a little larger. The major held the photograph with his good hand and looked at it very carefully.

The words in the excerpt from Ernest Heminway's "In Another Country" matching with their meaning are:

1. Fencer: (a person who practice fencing) - Fencing is the sport of fighting with long, thin swords.

2. Resign: ( to yield or to accept) - You must resign yourselves to wait a bit longer.

3. Withered: ( to be shriveled) - A withered arm or leg has not developed properly and is thin and weak.

Answer:

fencer: a person who practices fencing

resign: to yield or accept

withered: to be shriveled

Explanation:

Fencer - Fencing is a sport in which people use foils (special point swords) to battle each other. Fencing is all about strategy and evaluating your opponent. It does not rely on bravery.

Resign - In the sentence, the husband is having a hard time accepting the death of his wife. We see his emotions when he bites his lower lip and admits he's having a difficult time.

Withered - The photograph shows a hand "almost as small as the major's". The context clues show that the hand has changed to become smaller. This helps to prove that withered means shriveled.

Based on the poems on pages 42–47, what is the decision Ha’s family is trying to make? Is this decision challenging for them? Wh
Elza [17]

The poems show that Ha's family must decide to leave South Vietnam for an unknown destination unless they must suffer the fate of their father arrested by the Communists and suffer hunger and deprivations of the raging war between North and South Vietnam.

 • The decision to leave is challenging because they have to abandon their father to the Communists without knowing his fate

 • It is a difficult decision because, at first, they do not know where they are escaping or their chances of outsmarting the ubiquitous Communists.

 • The decision to escape from South Vietnam is challenging to Ha's family because they will now have to live in a cultural setting that is discriminating.

Thus, it remains a difficult decision to leave one's home for an unknown land.
