In the United States, these slaves lacked many rights that white Americans possessed such as the right to vote, right to own property, right to a jury trial, etc. These individuals, instead, were viewed as valuable property since they were "owned' by plantation owners. Slaves during this time were traded and sold like property as well, as they could be split up from their families at any given time.
