Yoshiko Uchida wrote his story of “Desert Exile” during the post events of the attack of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Air Force and Navy in World War II. He and his family were sent to the camps that built the United States government to concentrate Japanese descendants in the U.S. West. The detail in his story of how “the cook reached into the dishpan full of canned sausages and dropped two on his plates with the fingers”, tries to show the unsanitary conditions at the camp.
