The Tet Offensive was a major attack by Vietnamese communist forces against South Vietnamese and American forces during the Vietnam War, in the local New Year celebration on January 31, 1968.

The best known of the attacks was the terrorist attack on the Saigon Embassy. The attack was, in effect, a surprise, although the Americans had a hint of it in advance. The Communists killed at least 2,000 civilians in Hue, which they occupied. The Americans held their ground in Khe Sanhi. Militarily, the Tet Offensive was a defeat for the communist forces, as most of the attacks were struck within three weeks. But the attack was a sign that the United States had failed to defeat the guerrilla resistance. Thus, the attack turned the mood of the American population even more against the war.
