The correct answer is D) they believed the South should solve its own problems.

Many Northerners began to call for an end of Reconstruction because they believed the South should solve its own problems.

The Reconstruction program implemented by the government after the Civil War consisted of the restoration of the Union, the change of the society in the Southern states, and eliminating slavery. But as time went by, many radical Republicans considered that Reconstruction should end because the Southern states were the ones that must deal and solve with their own problems.

When slaves fled to union-held fort monroe, how did benjamin butler, the general in charge there, respond?
marshall27 [118]

Benjamin Butler was a Union general in the U.S Civil war. He is one of the first generals appointed by President Abraham Lincoln, and his first task is to defend the capital Washington DC in case the State of Maryland seceded from the Union. In 1861, he was tasked to secure Fort Monroe, which lies on the mouth of the James River and guards the Hampton Roads. Fort Monroe posed a threat to Richmond, the Confederate Capital. There, Gen. Butler famously decreed that all escaping slaves that crossed the Union lines would not be returned to their owners, in defiance of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
