Persistent depressive disorder is also known as dysthmia.

It is a mild but long term mental disorder.

It goes unnoticed and always undiagnosed and untreated.individual suffering from persistent depressive disorder feels so weak and down,they lack energy to carry out normal activities of daily living, low self esteem, inability to initiate and sustain sleep(insomnia), and loss of appetite.

When left untreated,it has ability to interfere with the normal functioning of the body,and family/social life are also affected.

Treatment is with counselling by a psychiatrist, psychologist or any qualified mental health professional, psychotherapy, recreational therapy, diversional therapy and the administration of antidepressant drugs like citalopram.

In major depression,there is changes/ alteration in the brain function which can be as a result of biological,social or psychosocial causes.

Management/treatment is same as persistent depressive disorder.
