This type of fault, located in California, is called transform. Transform faults are found at <em>transform plate boundaries</em>. This means that those plates are moving one next to each other, or more precisely - horizontal. Areas with transform faults have frequent seismic activity.

Greatest risk of damage of an earthquakes has San Francisco. Reason for that lays in fact that city area is situated on the fault. Good proof for that risk in practice is devastating earthquake from 1906, when San Francisco was heavily damaged with thousands of fatalities. That was one of the greatest natural disasters in US history.
