The structure of amino acids:

All amino acids have a central carbon atom, which is surrounded with a hydrogen atom. This central carbon atom is also surrounded by a carboxyl group (COOH), an amino group (NH2), and an R-group. What differs the amino acids is its R group. There are 20 different kinds of amino acids, and the R group, or side chain, is different for each one.
