Several languages were used during this time period in Europe. However, the <em>lingua franca</em> of the continent was Latin. Latin was the official language of the Catholic Church, as well as the language of the Roman Empire. Because of this, intellectuals and scholars associated Latin with education, reason, logic, knowledge and discovery. The use of Latin across most of Europe allowed for the spread of ideas of the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution.
