The colonies have been of great benefit for the colonial powers. There are several reasons for that, with the main being the economic factor. The colonies were regions that were occupied, so the local population was suppressed and didn't had lot of rights, and the colonists were using the locals as a very cheap labor force. Also, the regions that were chosen to be colonies were regions that were rich in certain resources, so they provided the colonists with lot of raw materials for free. Once the raw materials were manufactured, the colonists were using the colonies as markets, and they were selling the finished goods to the locals, thus earning lot of money from it.
