Well first, you’d distribute 4(2x-5) and get 3 + 8x - 20 = 23
then you’d combine -20 and +3 and get -17, so you’d have -17 + 8x = 23
add 17 to both sides, leaving you with 8x = 40
divide 8 on both sides and you get x=5

If the scale is 1 : x, then divide the actual distance by x to calculate the map distance. If you were in Texas and wanted to figure out how many miles it was to Wyoming.
