The answer to this would be that the Jamestown colony was the oldest one as it was found in 1607, and the colony south of it would be the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Even though Roanoke had been found earlier, it did not succeed as a colony, unlike Jamestown which thrived after the founding of tobacco.
