During World War I, the Allies decided to apply a "Total War" strategy, which consisted of destroying the enemy's resources. This would usually result in lengthy battles that lasted numerous weeks or even months.

On the other hand, World War II consisted of the Leap Frogging Strategy, which consisted of isolating key enemy dependencies and subsequently attacking them once they were lacking the capability to cover for their primary needs.
