Intercellular signaling involves the transmission of the sending cell to the receptor cells. There are some basic chemical signals mechanisms between cells: Synaptic, Paracrine, Aotucrine, Endocrine, and by direct contact between cells.
In <u>paracrine signaling</u>, cells that are close to each other communicate by the release of chemical substances that can diffuse in the intercellular space. They produce changes in the target cells by altering their behavior or their differentiation. These are short distances communications that allow cells to coordinate their activities and function in a local area with their neighbors. These paracrine signals are very important in many aspects but especially during development, when a group of cells "tells" or "indicate" to another group of cells in their vecinity which identity to adopt.
