In the Catholic church they believed that if you weren't good enough to go to heaven you would go to a holding place called Purgatory In order to get someone out of this place you would have to buy indulgences. This was a ploy by the Catholic Church to scare members to buy these so that they could raise money.

It allowed the state of Missouri to become a part of the union while retaining slavery, balanced by admitting Maine, which was a free state. It also prohibited slavery in the new Louisiana Purchase states. It was considered deeply flawed on both sides, and merely established the differences that would later lead to war.
