The right option is the second one. Rainsford makes readers know that he is not superstitious nor is worried about the supernatural consequences of a sailor's fear, but rather thinking that a sailor superstitious attitude could be harmful for the company's reputation. Rainsford's statement comes more out of cautiousness for business than fear of the supernatural.
